What is Melanoma?
Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that develops in melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells in the skin. It is one of the most aggressive forms of skin cancer but is also one of the most preventable with early detection. While melanoma can occur anywhere on the body, it is most found on sun-exposed areas such as the back, legs, arms, and face. If caught early, melanoma can often be treated effectively, but without treatment, it can spread to other parts of the body.
Other Types of Skin Cancer
While melanoma is the most well-known type of skin cancer, several other types also require attention
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): The most common form of skin cancer, BCC’s can appear as a small, shiny bump or lesion. It grows slowly and rarely spreads to other parts of the body but can damage surrounding tissues if left untreated.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): SCC’s often appear as a red, scaly patch or ulcer that can become painful. It tends to develop in areas that are frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face, ears, neck, hands, and forearms. They can grow quickly, usually over several weeks or months.
Actinic Keratosis (AK): Although not cancerous, actinic keratosis’ are a precancerous condition that can develop into squamous cell carcinoma if not treated. It presents as rough, scaly patches on sun-damaged skin.
